Shelby*

I hate peeing in a cup.” Shelby said sitting on the examination bed. She swung her feet, looking down at the ground.
Don't we all!” Daniel said laughing.
All you gotta do is point and shoot. It's a lot easier to pee if you're a guy.”
You gotta pull out your junk in front of a bunch of other dudes. It ain't as easy as you chicks make it seem.” He said looking at Shelby swinging her feet. “Shortie.”
Shut up! They have stalls in the bathroom. You don't always have to use a urinal.” Shelby said as there was a knock on the door, and a doctor walked in.
Ms. Shipley?” He looked from Shelby to Daniel, then back to Shelby.
That would be me.” She said looking up at him.
Well the good news is that you're not sick.”
I didn't think I was. I feel pretty much fine.”
But you are pregnant.” He had a slight smile on his face as Shelby's mouth dropped.
What?” Shelby and Daniel said together.
Congratulations.” He said looking at Daniel.
Nope. Not mine. I already have two.” Daniel answered looking over at Shelby who was biting her lip.
I just thought...”
Well you thought wrong doc. How far along is she?”
You can't tell that by a urine sample. But we can look on an ultra sound. If you'd be up to one.” The doctor asked, looking back at Shelby. She nodded, unable to really speak. “I'll be back with an ultrasound machine in just a few minutes.” He walked out the door and Daniel quickly stood up.
Wow Buddii! You're pregnant!” He had a smile on his face as Shelby looked down at her stomach.
I thought...I didn't think...I don't know. I was not expecting this.” Shelby couldn't look at him. She couldn't look away from her stomach. Shocked was a word that didn't have enough of a meaning for this situation. She had no idea what to do, and she had no idea where to start.

Beginning*

She rushed out of bed and ran for the bathroom. She slid to the ground and knelt over the toilet, letting the contents of her stomach fall into the bowl. The sounds caused him to get out of bed and walk down the hallway into the bathroom. He stood in the doorway, looking over at her.
“That's the third day in a row this has happened.”
“You don't think I've realized this?”
“Maybe you should go to the doctors.”
“Maybe you should go home to your family.” She looked up at him and wiped her mouth as she stood up.
“I'm just trying to look out for you.”
“You don't have to. I can carry my own.” She opened the mirror and reached for her tooth brush, quickly wetting it and placing a glob of tooth paste on top.
“Whatever.” And without another word, he walked away, slamming the front door after himself.
